Explore your options January 9, 2009 I've had the product for about 2 weeks now and have used it about 6 times. This is the first trimmer I have used. It provides a very clean trim, and the vacuum feature makes this product worthwhile over others (from what I can assume). The benefit of having one-size cuts all is very nice, but a trimmer with interchangeable trimming lengths would probably be more sufficient. The rotating zoom on this sometimes moves slightly out of place which changes the length of the trim slightly (my neurosis brings this to my attention since I prefer everything to be precise). I typically charge it while I am in the shower and then remove the charger to trim (it holds charge very well). Having a wireless trimmer makes it easier to maneuver. Shaving while plugged in often makes it slightly more difficult to use. Overall, this is a great product, granted I've only used it a limited number of times. My suggestion, if you're neurotic about trim length, is to look around and find a trimmer with trimming attachments for varying lengths because of the occasional twist of the zoom feature that changes the trimming length.
When recharging, you must remember to later unplug: or else what? January 9, 2009 The mechanical tech department at Norelco have produced another fine shaver/trimmer mechanism. Unfortunately the sales department has downgraded quality by packaging the trimmer with a cheap recharging system.
Most quality rechargeable items nowadays can be left in the recharging base constantly, always ready for use. Not this thing. The user directions warn that it must be charged no longer than 24 hours. What happens if you forget? I don't know but there are stories on the internet where overcharging other products (not this one) has burnt down houses. Perhaps this item would not dangerously overheat the first time or the second, and perhaps not the third. Maybe it would just lessen the life of or ruin the battery. Who knows? Who can predict the outcome?
What chemistry is the battery? Well there's a hint in the user instructions about the necessity of conditioning the batteries: "... do not recharge trimmer between trimming sessions. Continue using it until the battery is completely empty". And then twice a year you are advised to run down the batteries completely.
So, I don't have the recharging cord anywhere near the bathroom sink, I could forget while away a few days that it is plugged in and therefore charging. Instead the cord is in the leaving room so once a week, I can watch TV while recharging where I can see the status light to remind me to unplug the dang thing when its done. Just like my cell phone :(.
Not like my NiteRider bicycle light, which is hassle free plug and play. Can be left in the charging stand for days, weeks, months, according to the instructions. Other products by NiteRider can't do that, only their better/newer ones. Their cheaper models are like this Norelco shaver as far as recharging goes.
The on/off switch is right on top, a light touch to cycle it. Wonderful! Now when you travel you pray that the thing isn't cutting up your clothes in the suitcase. How hot will it get in there if it does come on? Not good.
As for how well it trims, on a scale 1 to 10, I would say 10. The basic mechanics are well designed.
Great so far January 9, 2009 Only tried it once so far -- for beard trimming -- but it's very promising.
The "mowing" operation -- getting my beard to an even length -- went extremely well. It was easy, the results were good, and the vacuum did a surprisingly good job of capturing most of the trimmed hair.
The "edging" operation was a little less successful, but I think that new personal care products like this always take a little while to get used to. I'm optimistic that I'll go from liking it to loving it with a little practice.
And the battery ran the trimmer strongly throughout that first session. It's a Ni-Cad battery, so you KNOW it will disappoint you in the end, but: - The instructions are very clear about how to maximize a Ni-Cad battery's life. - You can always fall back to corded operation. (That's a smart design.)
GREAT PRODUCT January 9, 2009 Easily adjustable from 3/4 in. to very short stubble. Vacuum works great for keeping area clean.
Pappa Smurf January 8, 2009 I have had a beard for over 20 years and I can not believe that it took me this long to get a trimmer. I can see no fault with this product. It is easy to use, it takes less time to trim my beard, and the results are a consistent even trim every time.
I love the vacuum, as it eliminates almost all clean up after trimming my beard. A minor problem is that it too easy to hit the vacuum button while you are trimming your beard. Other than that, it is a great product.
