About Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike,  Ellipticals... it is a bad idea in general. If you want something effective, go for a rowing machine: it's a full-body workout for cardio. If that's too intimidating an idea (they can be tough) then the next best bet is a recumbent exercise bike. (Comfortable seating position, good workout on the legs, pretty good cardio workout.) If that's out, then a treadmill is still better. Get one with the capability for a good incline - you can get a decent cardio workout with a comfortable walking pace (2.5-3mph) if the incline is high enough.The thing is, ellipticals don't do much for you... the motion is not something that translates into any normal activity, and the machine does much of the work - this is why people (who are in horrible shape and can't last a half hour on any other machine) can do 2 hours on an elliptical: it's not getting them to do anything.
