Waterloo: The History of Four Days, Three Armies, and Three Battles

Everyone Must Meet Their Waterloo..

A day late but Happy 200th Anniversary to The Battle of Waterloo.

"If the outcome had been different we might be speaking French today. And eating better food."

Waterloo: The History of Four Days, Three Armies, and Three Battles

The French still haven't forgiven the British. When they made a $46m miniseries about Napoleon with Christian Clavier and Gerard Depardieu, not only did they not mention Wellington at all but they completely ignored the British Army's role in beating him and never even acknowledged its existence.

And I thought I knew how to hold a grudge...

Well to be honest the British more or less just held on till the Prussians came to the rescue. And 1/2 of the Duke's army was Dutch/Belgium but in the British version it was just the "Thin red line" vs. Napoleon.

Classic Film : Peanuts

There's a new 'Peanuts' movie coming out. My favourite is 'Snoopy Come Home' (1972) but I love them all.

Your Favorite Alfred Hitchcock Film...

Your Favorite Alfred Hitchcock Film... What's your favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie? Mine's Rope followed by Lifeboat and then Psycho.

Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho

1. "Vertigo"

2. "Under Capricorn"

3. A lot of classic thrillers: "The 39 Steps", "The Lady Vanishes", "Shadow of a Doubt", "Notorious", "Rope" (just elevated to the list this year), "Strangers on a Train", "Rear Window", "North by Northwest", "Psycho". I could always elevate another if it improves somewhat on another viewing.

the palme d'or and the camera d'or?

I couldn't find this on the internet but I was wondering if anyone knew if a film can win both of those awards at the Cannes film festival, and if any film ever has before? Can a film win both the palme d'or and the camera d'or?

Rules considered, yes, a film can win both prizes but never happens because it's almost impossible that a first feature film by an unexperienced director is accepted in the official selection. It's even more unlikely for such a film to win the Palm d'Or.

Soderbergh won Palm d’Or for his first feature.

Leonor Greyl Huile De Palme

Leonor Greyl Huile De Palme

I can’t think of a single film that won Camera D’Or award after being in the official competition section.

The official rules for the Camera d'or are posted on the Festival de Cannes website and article three states the following:

The films (as defined in Article 2) which can compete for "CamĆ©ra d'Or 2015 - Festival de Cannes" are those shown in the Official Selection (Competition, Out of Competition, Un Certain Regard) or in one of the Parallel Sections, “The Critics’ Week” or “The Directors’ Fortnight”.

So, yes, it looks as though a film that could win the Palme d'or could also win the Camera d'or.

Cassandra's Dream's cinematography

I honestly can't think of many with terrible cinematography, it's usually just mediocre and bland at worst. What film do you think has the worst cinematography you have ever seen?

Cassandra's Dream has some awful cinematography, by a great cinematographer might I add.

Cassandra s Dream

Cassandra's Dream

Miami Vice-The Movie ain't that great. Seems director Michael Mann was, in gee-whiz fashion, really tinkering with the gain boost on his then-new Sony Cine-Alta camera. It looks like he and his cinematographer had the gain boost cranked up to +21db on some of that stuff. The exterior night scenes, especially in the trailer park where Trudy has been kidnapped, appear to be only available light, from sodium vapor lights and such, and exhibit HORRENDOUS grain.

I'm going to say Michael Mann's Public Enemies. I just can't take to the digital photography of that movie.

the saddest songs - Donna Summer

One of the saddest songs ever made..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3rEzI0PtPA

I was listening to her VH1 album just the other day and was saddened that she left us so soon. She was incredibly talented and I never got a chance to see her perform live. May God embrace her soul.

Donna Summer: VH1 Presents Live and More Encore!

Donna Summer: VH1 Presents Live and More Encore!

It's nice to know another person here appreciates donna summer as much as me....even if that someone is you, runeld.

I also thing she was the best female singer ever! Fantastic in "Could it be magic", "MacArthur Park"," Last Dance", "Bad Girls", "Hot Stuff", "Dimm off the lights", "On the Radio", "State of independence", "This time is for real" and many others. She never gave a poor performance because she was talented and also a very beautiful women, a very nice person She was a idol of my generation (but in a god sense). It is a pity that she passed away so young!

Greatest film themes

Love Theme - Vangelis..

Artist: Vangelis
Film: Blade Runner
Year: 1982

that love theme from Vangelis is intoxicating, cool, serene, and at the same time tragic, that swanky sax really tugging at the heartstrings. Vangelis also wrote the instantly recognizeable theme for the slow-motion runners in Chariots of Fire, as well as a really touching love theme for Mel Gibson's Fletcher Christian and the Tihitian native girl in The Bounty.

It's tough to define "greatest". "Greatest" as in powerful and spectacular, or "greatest" as in intimately beautiful and touching?

I think some of the "greatest" films themes were written by John Williams:

Jaws (Shark Theme, Orca Sea Chanty)
Star Wars (Main Title, Duel of the Fates, Han & Leia's Love Theme, Luke and Leia's Brother and Sister theme, Battle of Heroes)
Superman-The Movie (Main Title and Love Theme)
The Indiana Jones March
E.T. (Main Theme, E.T. and Me, the end bicycle chase and Over the Moon)
Jurassic Park (Park Theme, captures the power and grace of the beasties)

Blade Runner, Vangelis

Blade Runner, Vangelis

Jerry Goldsmith wrote a lot of great themes too, with Patton and Star Trek right up there. His Ave Satani from The Omen is bone-chilling.

Maurice Jarre's Lawrence of Arabia

Miklos Rosza's Ben Hur

Max Steiner's Main Theme from Gone With the Wind, his Main Theme and "You Must Remember This" from Casablanca and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz

Howard Shore's mournful Ring Theme from Lord of the Rings

Hans Zimmer's tragic themes to Gladiator and Pearl Harbor

James Horner's Main Title and Kirk and Spock Friends Theme from Star Trek II-The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III-The Search for Spock, "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic

Scaramanga Makes MWTGG, Man With The Golden Gun

Francisco Scaramanga Makes MWTGG, Man With The Golden Gun.. Christopher Lee saves it from being the worst Bond movie. He is awesome in it.

Diamonds are for Ever is the worst.

Blofeld is a joke.

My least favorite bond girls.

and it still would be better than Man with The Golden Gun if not for Lee. Everything else is crap except the car flip. Maude Adams is pretty hot too.

Hulk Hogan as an actor?

What is your opinion of Hulk Hogan as an actor?

I truly think Suburban Commando is a funny film; I've always liked it.

WWE Figure Signature Series Hulk Hogan

WWE Figure Signature Series Hulk Hogan

As an actor, I think Hulk Hogan was limited. He is an excellent live performer, but as has been proven with a number of musicians and comedians, being able to electrify a crowd does not necessarily translate to film.

To be fair, though, I don't think someone like Stallone or Schwarzenegger could have achieved the success that Hogan did in wrestling.

Sally Hawkins.. The Phone Call..Persuasion..2007..Fingersmith..

if you saw Sally Hawkins in "Persuasion..2007" "Fingersmith" or the short "The Phone Call" you would see what a great talented actor she is, just acting natural, absolutely outstanding performances.

So why does Sally Hawkins have all her teeth done and get scripted into films with "forced" performances like, Blue Jasmine, Made in Dagenham, Happy go Lucky and oh my goodness "Love Birds" enough said about that.

Sally Hawkins, The Phone Call

I think Sally Hawkins is a wonderful actress! Fingersmith is one of my favorites!

Camera with 24 frames per second?

You don't necessarily need an expensive camera, but you need a camera with manual settings (which are, in many cases, more expensive than a point and shoot model). You can pick up all kinds of used prosumer cameras on Ebay for less than $500 and set your shooting speed to 24p.

Default cameras in europe record at 25 frames per second, and in the USA its 29.97. It's referring to broadcast television standards, which largely defined consumer electronics for many years. I haven't even looked at a consumer-grade video camera in over a decade but it's very possible that consumer grade specs will start to change as broadcast continues to change (analog to digital signal, 4:3 to 16:9, etc).

NIX 12 inch Hi-Res Digital Photo Frame with Motion Sensor & 4GB Memory (X12C)

NIX 12 inch Hi-Res Digital Photo Frame with Motion Sensor & 4GB Memory (X12C)

When you place your product in a video editing software on your computer, you rip it at 24 frames per second, this will create a very undesirable effect. If you have decent editing software it will throw all kinds of warnings at you before adding 30 fps footage into a 24 fps project. Always shoot at 24p.

In the movie 28 days later, this defect is done on purpose in the scenes with the infected running around, this is slightly different - this was shot at 24p on a Canon XL1 but with a very high shutter speed. This eliminates the motion blur that you're accustomed to seeing at a more conventional shutter speed of 1/50 or 1/60.

Best camera for 100 bucks or less used?

What is the best camera that can can get on eBay, used, for 100 bucks or less, to shoot some short films?

Do you have an iPhone or similar phone with a decent video camera on it? If so, that will be much better than anything you can find for under $100.

For example Galaxy s5, the camera on the S5 is great! Seriously, though, if you were to spend the dough on a cheap camera from eBay you probably wouldn't be happy with the image. There are myriad free or cheap apps on the Google Play store that will also allow you to stylize your video, whereas you're stuck with the home video look if you were to use an entry level camcorder.

If you have to upgrade, there's something called magiclantern.fm for Canon EOS cameras that unlocks some cool movie camera features. Try local pawnshops and ads... Might be cheaper than ebay.

Unless you're just shooting drunk friends hurting themselves, you'll want something that accepts external microphones. Also, replaceable recording media.

Sense 8 of "brothers" Wachowski

Sense 8.. Is it another low point of "brothers" Wachowski? Or is it going back to quality of Matrix times?

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: The Matrix was never *that* amazing

Cloud Atlas, Director Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski

Cloud Atlas, Director Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski

It's fun to watch but not to be taken too seriously. Some of the stories are more interesting than others so sometimes it feels a bit slow.

Love the Mexican actor, trans-lady and girlfriend, and German guy. DJ girl and Kenyan boy and kind of boring. Indian girl, Korean financial lady and Chicago cop are OK.

The Edge of Shadows by Elizabeth George..

What are you reading June 2015..

The Edge of Shadows by Elizabeth George, the third book in a series about a teenage girl "hiding" out on Whidbey Island. I think this is a Young adult book, its a little mysterious, Becca, the girl can hear people's thoughts and has to wear a device to block out all these thoughts. The characters in the book are interesting and well developed.

Elizabeth George, The Edge of the Shadows (Edge of Nowhere)

Elizabeth George, The Edge of the Shadows (Edge of Nowhere)

Also I'm reading Tail Gait by Rita Mae Browne and Sneaky Pie Brown, this time its more than Mrs. Murphy and her pals, the book bounces from present day to Virginia's Revolutionary past. The Mrs. Murphy (tabby cat) mysteries are a must for cat lovers.

Sir Christoper Lee is a living legend.

Aaah, for *beep*'s sake give this man an Oscar while he's still alive

The subject says it all,
but come on,"the Academy", this man has been in EVERYTHING!
Sir Christoper Lee is a living legend.
Not too many left at this gentlemans age.
Respect,show it! \m/

Christoper Lee, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings

The man deserves more than an Oscar. A Lifetime Achievement and the highest honor (whatever that may be) for horror fans. His role as Dracula alone is the stuff of legends and his role in The Whicker Man is pure evil! Kudos to the legend!

Taron Egerton, Hair

Watched "Kingsman" and really liked Taron Egerton in it. I looked him up along with the rest of the cast and noticed his hair. Was he wearing a wig in the film? And if so, is his hair thinning in the front?

AFAK, no wig. They might have dyed his hair though.

Taron Egerton, Kingsman: The Secret Service

Taron Egerton, Kingsman: The Secret Service

About the thinning, during most of the promotion of Kingsman he just had a horrible haircut.
I think he just likes to shave the sides of his head because during the filming of Eddie the Eagle his hair grew back to normal; but now it is once again how it looked when he was promoting Kingsman, although slightly better.

Michiel Huisman, Daario Naharis in GoT

Michiel Huisman, The new Daario Naharis in GoT!

I like him better than Skrein. Both have amazing charisma though. Ed Skrein was fine, but Michiel Huisman is awesome. I'm glad he gets to be on GoT maybe Dutch press will finally notice he has made it in the USA and much more so than Carice van Houten.

Michiel is more true to the books character-the other dude was too pretty. Lets see if they paint Michiel blue and knot up his hair. Both men are good actors, Michiel is more rugged in tune with the book

Wild, Michiel Huisman

I love him as new Daario! Actually I like him more than the previous actor. He and Emilia has great chemistry!

Asa Butterfield, The new Spiderman

Asa Butterfield : The new Spiderman looks about 12...

He looks 18. But rarely are teens in movies actually played by teens.

Apparently he is 6 foot, but he looks tiny.

Asa Butterfield, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Asa Butterfield, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Asa Butterfield looks WAY too young. Not to mention his threadbare filmography. With Tobey and Sir Mumbles the age was spot on, at least for those films.

Why not go with a mid 20's Spidey? Or at least someone that looks like they can vote.
