TurboTax Deluxe 2016 Tax Software Federal & State + Fed Efile PC/MAC Disc [Amazon Exclusive]

Are you sure you downloaded the 2016 product and not some posting selling the 2014 product?

Here is the link that shows all the forms supported by all TurboTax versions of the CD/Download software
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/deluxe.jsp

Then in the grey banner that starts "Benefits" click "Tax Forms" which displays all tax forms supported by all versions.

Curmudgeon34 says:
I am sure that I have the 2016 version. I does not say that Schedule D is included in the Deluxe version. That is a list of all forms available in various versions.

By the way I have now changed my I.D. to curmudgeon34 as the we seem to have conflicting I.D.'s.

TurboTax Support says:
Hi Curmudgeon34,

TurboTax Deluxe 2016 for desktop includes all of the forms available in the desktop products. If you're not able to locate the forms, please reach out to TurboTax Support, we're happy to show you where the forms are located.

Benny

John Becich says:
How does anyone "reach out to TT Support"? Can you provide a link? I'm deeply concerned about Curmudgeon34's discovery of lack of Schedule D; it was supposed to be 'there.' Contacting TT in expectation of speaking to a human can take an eternity; this is commodity software and I have no delusions of personal attention to my problems.

THANK YOU, CURMUDGEON34, FOR BEING THE CHAMPION OF MANY!

Curmudgeon says:
Unfortunately, whomever Curmudgeon34 and several more similar identities [he's posted numerous] is, he is simply wrong. He failed to notice that the Schedule D was certainly included in the Desktop [again, not talking about online!]
The Official TurboTax reply to him read exactly as follows:

"TurboTaxBenny Moderator 4 days ago
If one purchased TurboTax Deluxe 2016 for desktop, they can get to Schedule D multiple ways:
By going through the interview format and answering the series of questions for Schedule D - Namely that if you have either Capital Gains reported on a Form 1099-D or have received a Form 1099-B or have otherwise to report the sale of investment assets.
-Wages and Income: Investment Income -
By going to the Forms mode and selecting the correct worksheets and forms to produce a Schedule D.
Last and easiest method is by using the search bar in the top right hand side and typing the word Schedule D.
- It will allow you to "Jump To" the Schedule D interview by clicking on the words 'Jump To'-
If one is in the interview section and they see an optional upgrade screen, there is a button to continue in Deluxe."

TurboTax Support says:
Hi John,

Once you launch TurboTax 2016 for desktop, you can type the word 'Contact' in the search bar, and it will display a link to call us. That will guide you to get one-on-one help from one of our TurboTax experts. We can be reached throug social media, you can also use our help site to get direct help and answers from other experts or users.

Amazon has very detailed information sections and other users have provided reviews confirming the forms are there. Feel free to contact us if you need help locating common forms and sections of the software, we're happy to help.

AGLEZ says:
Thank you, this is so helpful. I switched to H&R a couple of years ago when TT removed the Capital Gains form from the Deluxe version. I see now that it was added so I may come back. While I like both systems I do think that TT is friendlier. Update: I do have some concerns now after going to the website since it does not show Form D listed under the Deluxe version. They recommend the Premier version just as they did a couple of years ago when they removed this form.

TurboTax Support says:
Hi AGLEZ,

The online versions of TurboTax are not the same as TurboTax for Desktop. TurboTax Desktop includes all of the forms and functionality our desktop customers expect. You may have been viewing the comparison chart for TurboTax Online. One can bypass the optional upgrade screen by choosing the continue button, instead of the upgrade choice. I hope this helps.

Benny

AGLEZ says:
This is too complicated, looks like I will stick with H&R Block. The CD version which I assume is the one referred to as "desktop" does not show this form either. It keeps recommending the Premier version.

TurboTax Support says:
I understand, in case it helps: If one arrives at an optional upgrade screen while using TurboTax desktop, you can click on the button to continue instead of upgrading. We recommend the upgrade to provide more help and guidance, but users can continue with the version of TurboTax that best suits their needs.

Dan J says:
What happens if in the search/help toolbar you type: sch d OR schedule D
Then in the box that comes up, click on "Jump to Schedule D". You should see the start of the interview process for Schedule D. I downloaded the PC version on 11/11/2016 and it had it.

Dan J says:
I can confirm that the Deluxe 2016 version has Schedule C, D & E and can import 1099's (although many won't be ready until Jan/Feb 2017). I have the software (downloaded on 11/11/16) and actually tried the program to use these schedules. As for the Premier or Home & Business upgrades, the Deluxe version recommends that on one screen for each schedule but gives you the option of continuing with Deluxe and I have not seen any issues that would cause me to upgrade. Perhaps the upgrade versions provide more guidance and might be something I might need one day but for now the Deluxe is working great. Hope this helps you & others reading this out.

FYI, I tried H&R Block last year and for me it was not as friendly or accurate as TurboTax (had a sales tax issue with AZ state). I verified the issue and that TurboTax did it correctly with a tax consultant.

hp1480 says:
does deluxe contain 4684 forms as apart of cd software

Dan J says:
@hp1480. I can confirm that the Deluxe download software for PC contains "form 4684 - casualties and thefts" as both a form and an interview process. I can't see that the CD version would be any different. I just opened TTAX 2016 Deluxe and typed "form 4684" in the search bar and it returned "form 4684 - casualties and thefts" and the interview process for "Stolen or Damaged Items"

Curmudgeon says:
In 2016, Form 4684, all pages (1, 2, & 3), is supported by all versions - Deluxe, Premium, and H&B - of desktop software

Amazon Customer says:
OK so it appears that the Deluxe version includes Schedule D. The question now is will the Deluxe version import data from financial institutions (brokerages) just like it used to or am I now forced to buy Premier?

Dan J says:
I went as far as I could (but because my forms are not ready yet, I couldn't actually import them). Here's the splash screen regarding the decision to stay in deluxe or upgrade:

Keep every dollar you deserve with TurboTax Premier

Premier is a better product for you if you have investment sales to report.
- Get extra help with capital gains and losses for your stocks and bonds-we will guide you through your cost basis calculations.
- Get added guidance for employee stock plans
- Talk to our tax experts for answers to all your tax questions
- Understand your tax history and maximize next year's refund with My Analysis & Advise

Upgrade to TurboTax Premier for just $30.00 and get these extra benefits.

"Continue in Deluxe" "Upgrade"

Once you continue in deluxe the next screen asks if you have any 1099-B forms to import and the screen after that let's you choose your bank or brokerage, import a TXF (Tax Exchange Format) file, or type it in.

In the past I've always used the "Deluxe" version and haven't had any issues.

TurboTax Support says:
Returning customers will find that they'll use the classic TurboTax Deluxe for desktop they've come to trust.

Benny

John Rogers says:
Thanks very much, everyone who contributed positively to this discussion! I was also confused by the website and the product comparisons on the back of the Deluxe box. I will keep the Deluxe version. BTW I called TT support and the person there said that I had to use Premier to include investment data in my return, after he checked with his leader. That answer was incorrect, according to the info here.

LilyPad says:
Thank you for my making my life a bit easier today.

SaltiDawg says:
If this looks "too complicated," you may want to hire a tax preparer.

Curmudgeon says:
To LilyPad, the 2016 TurboTax desktop does indeed have all the common tax forms and processing that almost all folks need. There are a few very rarely needed forms for unusual expense or really complex income situations that might not be there, but it is something really rare.

To SaltiDawg, As said earlier:
If it is not clear, ALL versions except Basic support all the forms listed for Deluxe.
The error in marketing TWO YEARS AGO (2014) is not repeated.
Deluxe supports Schedules C, D, SE
Deluxe supports Dividends, Capital Gain Dividends, Sales of Investment Assets, Sole Proprietory, and Self-Employed Contractor.
NOTE: Basic is limited and does not support all forms. So you get exactly the same forms for Deluxe - Premium - Home&Business - but as you move up the product line you get more assistance interactively in the program. If you buy Deluxe and at some point feel uncomfortable and want to move up to Premium, you can do that from within the program by having it go online and buy the upgrade.
NOTE: ONLINE SERVICE VERSIONS are different! So not use the forms list if thinking of using the online service!!!

Allan J. Wanamaker says:
excess medical expenses?

Curmudgeon says:
To Allan Wanamaker: What was your question?

Allan J. Wanamaker says:
are there special forms for medical expenses? i have excess over 3% of my sal.

Dan J says:
Allan,

You can use Schedule A to deduct excess medical expenses. The amount you can deduct is generally anything over 10% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) but there is a special case: if you or your spouse were over 65 before Dec 31, 2016, then you can deduct any amount over 7.5%. See this TurboTax article for more information: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/tax-tips/Tax-Deductions-and-Credits/-Can-I-Claim-Medical-Expenses-on-My-Taxes-/INF14196.html

This deluxe version will have a short Q&A regarding excess medical expenses and if you have enough will enter the amount on Schedule A. In the end you or TurboTax will determine whether it's better for you to take the standard deduction or those of Schedule A. Hope this helps you out.
