Amazon.com Product Description The 50mm f/1.4 standard lens is a terrific choice for both casual and professional photographers. The lens is outfitted with two high-refraction lens elements and new Gaussian optics, which combine to eliminate astigmatism and suppress astigmatic difference. As a result, the lens obtains crisp images with little flare even at the maximum aperture. The lens's f/1.4 speed, meanwhile, is perfect for available-light shooting. And as a bonus, this lens is the only lens in the EF system to offer an extra-small Micro Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) while still providing a full-time manual focusing option. Other features include a close focusing distance of 1.5 feet, a 58mm filter size, and a one-year warranty. Specifications - Focal length: 50mm

Great lens for low/available light portrait shooting January 9, 2009 I love this lens, I find myself using this more than my other lens for it's ability to take great pictures with the aperature wide open.
Must have lens for low light and portrait work January 6, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This lens is excellent. The large aperture helps when working with low light conditions. The DoF is clearly visible. Autofocus functionality is extremely fast and when used with AI Servo candid moments are rarely missed. The one drawback to this lens is that it is extremely difficult to manually focus.
Uses: Portraits, photojournalism, low light
Good fast lens January 6, 2009 Before I purchased my EF 50mm 1.4 usm lens I heard only good things about it. I was thinking about going with the EF 50mm 1.8 but the reviews said that it was not as good. I had a chance to take many pictures with this lens and can't believe how much fun it is to shoot with. There is nothing like a fast lens. At F 2.0 everything is razor sharp. You can shoot without a flash in poorly lit rooms and still get usable photos. This lens really captures a lot of light. I think everyone should have one of these in their camera bag.
Best Lens Purchase Possible January 1, 2009 I was thinking about getting the 50mm f/1.8 but once I went to the store and saw it I changed my mind. It already felt like a plastic toy that was going to fall apart in my hands. The manual focus ring is non-existent. The 50mm 1.4 on the other hand is a beauty. It really feels nice in the hand especially with a metal mount I can rely on. The full time manual focus is great even though this camera isn't a true USM. The low light focus ability of this lens is decent. Although the lens has somewhat of a soft focus at 1.4 is gets sharp at 1.8. All in all great lens. It id definitely worth paying extra over the f/1.8
Excellent Lens December 30, 2008 Great lens, worth the money. Very, very sharp, amazing low light capabilities, great bokeh, smooth and fast auto focus. What more can you want?
