Product Description
The Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace - whatever's important to you.Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Home Monitoring Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. Choose either MPEG-4 or Motion JPEG video compression for a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 640x480 video stream. The Compact Internet Home Monitoring Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any PC in the house, while the video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. The included Viewer & Recorder utility lets you record the audio/video stream to your local hard drive, "live" or on a predetermined schedule.also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent Webcam !!   January 9, 2009
This webcam rocks! Bought it to remote monitor my home while away on vacation and did not want to leave a PC on. Set it up on home wireless network, opened up port 1024, gave it a static IP address (to assure camera did not lose connection to wireless network), plugged it in, and voila, remote monitoring.

It performed steady as a rock, for weeks on end. I am not using the S/W that came with the camera to monitor it, but rather always accessing it from the web using ip:1024 (no need for paid DNS service). I did not need or use any special features like recording video or motion sensing. I did use the feature to set up a guest account for my friends, so everyone could keep an eye on things as well as the log to see how many times the camera was accessed, when, and by whom. Camera resolution is excellent. I had it pointed at a digital thermometer (2 to 3 feet away) and had no trouble with resolution.

I highly recommend this camera!

1 out of 5 stars LINKSYS INTERNET IP WEBCAM WIRELESS WVC54GCA   January 8, 2009
I have purchased a number of Linksys products over the years and have had only good experiences with them all. On the few occasions where I needed a bit of guidance their Tech Support was excellent. I expected nothing less when I bought this webcam but I was in for a shock. Camera setup for continuous mode was quite easy but after only a few hours of recording to my hard drive it became intermittent with long periods when nothing was recorded. Setup for Detection Mode does not seem to allow for recoding to the hard drive, the choices are limited to sending a clip by e-mail or making an FTP connection. Linksys seems to have now outsourced it's Tech Support to Asia. I had great difficulty in understanding the support staff . The first one I got put me on hold for 15 minutes after which I hung up and called again. The second one did not seem familiar with the camera at all and had to repeatedly put me on hold to 'go and check something'. He was not able to resolve any of the problems after over an hour on the phone and ended up telling me that a higher level tech would e-mail or call me in 24-36 hours. By the time I did get a call back from Linksys three weeks had passed and by then I had returned the defective camera to the vendor. I will not be so willing to buy Linksys products in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice and the price is great   January 2, 2009
I've read all the good and bad reviews on this product and a lot of folks where complaining about the set up. I guess I got lucky or something but set up both internally and via the internet was no problems. I normally a D-link fan but started having issues with my dlink network cameras so I decided to give linksys another shot. I really like this camera, I can log in from work to see what is going in and around my house. I have this camera peered up with my dlink 655 router and all works great!!!

1 out of 5 stars What good is this camera if the software is unusable?   December 31, 2008

I should have known better than to buy this camera considering the horrible experience I've had with LinkSys software for my wireless devices and my older version of this camera. The old camera worked adequately as a web-accessible camera but I wanted one that could record video too.

So, considering how far the price dropped on the WVC54GCA, I thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake. The software interface is atrocious. I mean bad, really bad. It looks like it was cobbled together from bits and pieces of code spanning Windows versions from the 1980's on up. There is zero consistency between dialogs. I don't care that much about looks so I could accept that if the recording software worked. It doesn't. I can't do anything worthwhile with the recording features since the playback utility crashes all the time. It seems to work for a while which gives me a good indication that it is somewhat capable of doing what it is supposed to do. However, as soon as I try to navigate the recorded video, it crashes. It crashes in many different ways. Change the start date of the video range, it crashes. Try to zoom into a range of video, it crashes. Try to change and save settings, it crashes.

This is clearly alpha-level software that hasn't even made it to beta stage let alone releasable. Where did they outsource their software department to? A pre-school?

Seriously, this software is bad. I can't recall ever seeing software this bad released even independently let alone from a big company like LinkSys.

The way that video is stored is equally horrible. Think you're going to have access to that MPEG4 video that they brag about? Think again. You can convert it to an AVI (if you're lucky enough to not have it crash in the process) but it appears that the AVI is uncompressed! What's the point in having MPEG4 video if you have to convert it to an uncompressed AVI to use it outside of the program?

I keep giving the software another chance and it keeps failing. Avoid this camera!

5 out of 5 stars WVC54GCA   December 18, 2008
The Camera set up easy within my own network..... However it took some help to actually find my video over the internet. To find your Hostname and ip address go to (http://whatismyipaddress.com).(http://c-IPADDRESS.HOSTNAME..It looks really great once you find it over the internet. And you can log into this camera over the internet to make changes remotely to it. There is no need to use any of the paid modes to view it over the internet. Its just a matter of figuring out what the URL is for your own camera web page. This is not as easy at it would seem. But once you find and put it in your favorites its a really cool camera. I am planning on putting it on line when I am away from home. I have experimented with putting a digital read out thermometer in the view of camera so now I can read what the current temperature is in my house. The resolution with proper lighting is clear enough to easily read the numbers. This is really satisfying when away for longer times and pays for itself with the peace of mind I know that the home heating is maintaining house at the low temperature setting I chose in order to save energy. I also put an old analog hands style electric (not battery) clock in the view. The analog clock should read the current time...If the time lags I can tell that the power was off for the amount of time the clock is lagging in time. I also see the second hand sweeping so I can see the updating take place. Video updates every 1/2 second. I was also considering using the audio as a way of hearing if my home burglar alarm was actuated via A special lamp that would then trigger the email to send an alert!. Or I could set the clock and thermometer on wall next to my home burglars systems control panel and actually see if all the windows and doors are shut! With some imagination this camera is fun and Useful. I also run the Camera power thru a simple timer like the ones for Lamps this way it power cycles once a day to rest the camera. I have not found this to be needed but it helps knowing if camera did lock up it would be reset after 24 hours. If Linksys would really have documented this camera on the CD manual in more detail it would be a perfect camera (not well documented). You really need some tech experience to get it all up and running. It is not plug and play. I can foresee the next generation having servo motors in the base so one could pan and scan over the internet. I would buy another one like it if I had the need to monitor another location. I am very happy with it!
